Who funds free solar?

For solar, the government has been successfully running an incentive for many years now which is called the ‘Feed in Tariff‘, or, the ‘Generation Tariff’. It’s was put in place to make installing renewable technologies more appealing and to reward those who invest in to them.

Who qualifies for free solar?

Any home owner can apply for a free solar system, you do not need to be on benefits however there are some certain criteria which your property will need to meet:

1. Your roof must be face south, east, west or east and west.

2. Your roof must not be excessively shaded.

If you can afford to cover the cost of your new solar pv install (typically £5-6k), then this is highly recommended. By paying for, and owning your own solar system, you will be able to claim the generous feed-in-tariff payments which are available. If you claim the correct combination of income-related benefits, you could qualify to have a free boiler installed in to your home either completely free of charge, or heavily subsidised. When the scheme was extended in 2015’s new financial year, some changes took place the criteria was tweaked slightly.

Before you apply for a free boiler grant, below are five things you should know;

• Free Boilers are available for a limited time only – The Free Boiler scheme has been extended until 2017, but there is still only a very limited pot of funding which is available. If you think you may qualify, act fast and apply as quickly as you can.
• Income limited raised to £16,010 –  Last year, the limit was £15,860 if you were in receipt of Child Tax Credits, or Working Tax Credits. It has now been raised up to £16,010 which opens the scheme up to a whole new range of people.
• A/B Rated Boilers can now be replaced – Previously, the free boiler scheme did not allow installers to replace A/B rated boilers. Now, however, if your boiler is broken beyond economical repair, then you could qualify for a fully funded, free replacement.
• Funding levels have increased slightly – In recent weeks, new contracts have been rolled out to free boiler installers and the rate has increased slightly from what it was at the start of 2015. This means that if you had an assessment previously and were told you may have had to contribute a high amount to cover the installation costs, you may now be able to have the boiler installed for free, or subsidised even more.
• Nationwide Coverage – There are installers all over the country now who are able to look after the free boiler grant installation. So, no matter where you live, if you apply, you should be able to have a survey within as little as 48 hours.

If you have all of this in place, then you may still be able to have a free boiler installed before christmas. It is down to how fast the installer can fit you in, how busy their diary is etc.

Depending on what type of boiler you currently have in your home, will determine what type of free replacement boiler can be installed. If you have a combi boiler in your home which is over 8 years old, and not condensing, then you will be able to get a brand new A rated combi boiler installed in to your home free of charge.

If you currently have a boiler, and a separate hot water cylinder, you may be able to get this converted in to a combi boiler depending on how much ECO funding is available for your particular property. The amount of funding varies depending on how poorly efficient your property is. The more less efficient your home, the more funding will be available in order to complete a conversion of your system boiler in a combi boiler system.

What boiler brands are installed in the boiler replacement scheme?

You can have boilers from the top brands installed via the ECO scheme. Most commonly, you will be able to get a Vaillant boiler, or an Ideal. These are very popular boiler brands, and if you qualify, you can have one installed in to your home free of charge.

1 – Are Free Boilers still available?

In short, yes. Free boilers are still available via the UK Governments ECO Scheme in 2014. The scheme has been set up to help those in low-income households have energy efficient improvements installed in to their homes completely free of charge. Your boiler will need to be 8+ years old (not condensing) in order to qualify. In some circumstances, you may need to make a contribution to the installation, but this depends on how technical the job will be/any extras which you may want such as heating controls etc. The majority of the install will be fully funded by the grant.

2 – How long will it take to get my Free Boiler installed?

The timescales vary from company to company, but in general, you should expect to have your new free boiler installed in to your home within around 3-4 weeks from the point that your property is surveyed. You will need to ensure that all paperwork relating to your benefits claim relates to the property you are applying for. If it isn’t, it may delay the free boiler installation time.

3 – Who can apply for a free boiler?

Anyone in a private household. This means, home owners, private tenants and landlords. If you are living in a housing association, you will not be able to apply for a grant as it is their responsibility to maintain the heating system in your home.

4 – I live in a flat, can I apply for a free boiler?

You may well qualify for a free boiler under the ECO scheme, however, if your property is very small, and already well-insulated, you will not get a large amount of funding to go towards the installation of the free boiler. Generally, most companies will not accept applications from those living in flats because the job will not be financially viable.

5 – I don’t have a boiler, can I get a full central heating system for free?

No. Grants are only currently valuable for free boiler replacements/heating controls (where necessary). The cost of installing a full central heating system in to a home would be too much and there is not enough funding to complete such a large scale job for free.

As we approach winter, its never been a more important time to ensure that your current heating is up to scratch. We’ve had information that there are still a good number of installers in the Bradford/Leeds area who have access to funding to complete the free boiler installations. If you have an old boiler which is 9+ years old, and you receive child tax credits, income support etc and have a low income (less than £15,860 per year) then you will qualify to have a new boiler installed in your home free of charge.

Can I get a free combi boiler?

If you already have a combo boiler in your home, then you could have a brand new A+ rated combo condensing boiler installed free of charge. You will also get updated heating controls (where necessary). The boiler grants do not cover the cost of initialling radiators and any other special works may require a top-up in order to complete.
